I just went through my kids’ toys, donated the ones they rarely use, and organized EVERYTHING. It’s all linked in a post on my blog with some tips for toy storage ideas but I’ll share a few here, too.

1. Assess your needs. Go through your kids’ toys before you buy a bunch of bins and baskets. Measure shelving and figure out your “system” - do you want floor baskets? (I vote yes) Or is everything going in bins?

2. Declutter. I have a lot of thoughts on this but I have zero issue donating or passing on the things my kids don’t use that much. And my kids never seem to mind because I never retire toys they love which is why we have approximately 700 stuffed animals and bins of play food 🙃

3. Now for the fun part - it’s time to buy bins and baskets. Everything you see here is linked on my blog.

Sometimes, I look around and am so unbelievably grateful for these ordinary moments. School pick-ups that come with running, hugs, and an excited “mommmmm!!!”

Play dates, braids, plans, and cozy movie nights at home. Snow is falling and we’re all snuggled in my bed watching Elemental.

These are the days 🤍

My girls will be 4 and 6 this summer and often play in the playroom without an adult. I have arrived! 🎉

I’m giving them easier access to the things they love and toys that they can play with solo or together. As great as the art caddy has been, it’s too heavy for them to carry. So I switched it out for this lazy susan with removable bins.

If you’re interested in a link to the lazy susan, just leave a comment and I’ll send it right over.

Here are some ways I set my kids up for independence.

1. Make art accessible. 👆🏼 I also leave a jar of clickable markers at the play table in the kitchen. They love to draw and can now easily access everything on their own.

2. Make music and entertainment accessible. They have access to the Toniebox and the Google Nest Mini (screen free). They love blasting Taylor Swift in the playroom and when they’re not doing that, have stories and music playing on the Toniebox.

3. I keep some of their favorite toys in (aesthetically pleasing) baskets around the house. I have a basket of magnetites in the family room, and blocks and duplo in the play room. Switch things up, too.

4. Giant unicorns. 😂 But really. They each got a giant ride on unicorn for Christmas that I thought they’d use for a few weeks but ride them around the house DAILY.

5. Ask them for help. I often ask my girls to help with little projects around the house and excitedly thank them when we’re done. Margot let Buddy out yesterday and brought the Target delivery in. I was SO excited when I thanked her that unprompted, she decided to put everything away. That does NOT always happen but just wow.

And bonus: let them try new things. Margot has been asking to do voiceover since our Tonies campaign so I finally caved, and then Kate wanted to be a part of it, too. 😂
